Computer Forensics
Computer forensics can recover deleted data and identify user activity.
It requires the creation of a bit-stream image of the hard drive which should be done as quickly as possible. The most common cases that will benefit from computer forensics are:
- Trade Secret Theft - Whether or not somebody took data when they left a company is one of the most common situations involving computer forensics.
- Inappropriate Internet Activity - Are employees visiting or attempting to visit inappropriate websites or spending too much time on personal matters?
- Domestic Matters - Analysis of a hard drive can often help identify additional bank accounts or other resources that one party may be attempting to hide.
- Recovery of Deleted Data - Computer forensics can recover some files that have been deleted and often identify programs that may have been used to eliminate data.
How much does computer forensics cost? This will vary considerably depending on the scope of work and the experience of the examiner. A ballpark estimate to create the requisite bit-stream image is $500 but this will also vary depending on the size, quantity and location of hard drive(s).
